Sports betting is one of the most enthralling and exciting forms of betting. Sports lovers and people with good knowledge of various sports generally prefer to indulge in this type of betting rather than any other form of betting. It is essential for a beginner to understand the concept of odds and placing bets I order to progress any further.
When the money is put down for correctly predicting an outcome it is referred to as a bet. If a company or an individual has the license to accept bets on the prediction of events then the same is called a bookmaker.
Usually the price is referred to as the odd. It is the return that a bookmaker agrees to give for a win. In usual parlance odd refers to the probability that a particular outcome will result out of an event. Bookmakers form an interpretation of such probability and define them in form of the price. Then there is the concept of odds on and odds against. If the odds are less than even then the price offered is called the odds on. When the odds are more than evens, then the price offered is called odds against. The common forms of odds used in UK are the decimal odds. So they are also called the European odds. One needs to convert the chances into a decimal digit by removing the percentages. In the case of sports betting in the United States, it is the US odds that are followed. They are also referred to as the line odds. The positive signs show the amount that an individual wins for a 100 stake and a negative sign indicates how much an individual would need to stake to win 100.
Chances of winning are also indicated by some odds. A long odd shows that the selection made has rare chances to win but a short odd shows that chances of winning for the selection are pretty good. When a fixed sum of money is put at stake against the amount put by the bookmaker for prediction of events then it is called fixed odds.
